Bilbao Airport to the City: Bus, Taxi or Rental Car?
Updated October 23, 2026 · 4 min read
The answer first. Take the airport bus if you are staying in central Bilbao and can carry your luggage; choose a taxi when door-to-door convenience matters more than price; rent a car only when Bilbao is the start of a wider Basque Country trip. A car is usually a burden for a city-only stay because you then need somewhere to park it. If your route continues to Gaztelugatxe, small coastal villages or rural accommodation, compare Bilbao Airport rental cars before deciding.
The airport bus suits most city breaks
The public airport service links the terminal with central Bilbao and makes several city stops. Your best stop depends on the accommodation, not simply on which one sounds most central. Check the current route and timetable on the official Bizkaibus pages before travel, then compare the stop with your hotel on a map. Flight times and road conditions can change the practical choice.
The bus is best for one or two travellers with manageable luggage. Its disadvantages appear after the ride: cobbles, slopes and a final walk feel different with a large suitcase, a pushchair or late-evening fatigue. If your accommodation is not near a stop, the saving may not justify the awkward last section.
When a taxi is worth it
A taxi removes the transfer between the bus stop and your door. That matters for a family carrying several bags, travellers with limited mobility, or a group that can share the fare. It is also the calmest option after a delayed flight. Use the official rank at the terminal and ask the driver about the expected fare before setting off; this article does not quote one because traffic and tariff changes would make a fixed promise unreliable.
A taxi is less compelling for a solo traveller whose hotel is close to a bus stop. In that case, you pay mainly to avoid a straightforward public-transport journey.
When hiring a car makes sense
Do not hire a car merely to reach central Bilbao. Metro, tram, buses and walking cover the urban stay, while parking adds a task. The calculation changes when the airport transfer is also the first leg of a road trip. A car gives you control over departures to the Bizkaia coast, farm stays and places where a guided day trip would otherwise dictate the timetable.
Before booking, compare the collection desk, fuel policy, deposit, excess and what the CDW actually covers. Do not assume that “full protection” from an intermediary removes every charge at the rental desk. Add your flight number when the booking form allows it and read the rule for delayed arrivals.

Decide before the return journey too
For an early departure, check the first airport-bus service rather than assuming the daytime pattern applies. If it does not fit, arrange a taxi in advance. Drivers should allow time for refuelling and returning the car, then reaching the terminal from the return area. That extra step is easy to forget when a rental car initially looks like the most flexible choice.
Our recommendation is simple: bus for the typical central stay, taxi for difficult luggage or an awkward hour, rental car for a route that genuinely continues beyond Bilbao. If that third description fits, compare the rental terms, not just the headline price.
