Bilbao Estuary Boat Tour: City Cruise or the Longer Trip to Abra Bay?
Updated October 22, 2026 · 4 min read
The answer first. There are two boat trips that matter here, and they are different lengths. The 1-hour Bilbao boat tour or 2-hour cruise to Portugalete is the cheap, short option. The Bilbao estuary and Abra Bay boat tour takes around 160 to 165 minutes and goes out to where the estuary meets the sea. If you want to see the Bizkaia Bridge and the outer bay and have the time, take the longer one; if you only want a pleasant hour on the water, take the shorter one. Both are rated modestly, so read recent reviews before booking.
What you are sailing on
Bilbao sits on the Ría, the estuary of the river Nervión, and it is a working waterway as much as a scenic one. Heading downstream you leave the Guggenheim and the city behind and move towards the port, the industrial banks and then the outer bay known as Abra. The estuary’s best-known landmark is the Bizkaia Bridge, the red iron transporter bridge that links Portugalete and Getxo, and the longer tour’s listing says it passes both the Guggenheim and that bridge.
If you expect a boat ride through postcard scenery the whole way, adjust that. A good part of the journey passes port and industrial banks, which is the other side of the city’s reinvention around the Guggenheim.
The two trips compared
| Tour | What the listing says | Duration | From | Rating · reviews |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1-hour Bilbao boat tour or 2-hour cruise to Portugalete | Leaves from the Pío Baroja Pier, passes the city’s landmarks, with an audio guide | 1 to 2 hours | €15 | 4.2 · 3,447 |
| Bilbao estuary and Abra Bay boat tour | A scenic river cruise past the Guggenheim and the Bizkaia Bridge | 160 to 165 minutes | €19 | 4.1 · 1,110 |
There are also two much less booked options: a private sailboat tour along the estuary to the sea, listed at €270, and a combined Old Town, Guggenheim and river cruise at €38. Each has very few reviews, so treat them as unproven.
How to choose
The shorter trip is the most reviewed of the two by a wide margin, which suggests it is the one more people book on GetYourGuide. It gives you a choice of one or two hours, so check on the booking page which version your date is, and what you get with each. Its listing mentions an audio guide.
The longer trip costs only €4 more than the shorter one, and it lasts about 40 minutes longer than the two-hour version. That makes it better value if you want to reach Abra Bay, but its rating is the lower of the two, at 4.1. Neither listing says anything about seating, shade or whether the boat is covered, so ask the operator if the weather is a concern.
Is it worth doing at all?
The Ría is a good way to see how the city connects to the sea, and the price is low. But Bilbao’s best moments are on land, in the Old Town, at the Guggenheim and in the bars. If your time is short, give the boat less priority than those, and book it for an afternoon when the weather is settled. You can see the Bizkaia Bridge up close without a boat, as a separate trip from the city.
