Gaztelugatxe from Bilbao: Book a Tour or Go on Your Own?
Updated October 22, 2026 · 6 min read
The answer first. Going on your own is cheap and perfectly doable if you have a car, or can manage the summer bus, and have secured the free ticket on the days that require one. A tour is the better choice if you would rather not deal with parking, the ticket calendar and the drive back, or if you want Gaztelugatxe combined with fishing villages and Gernika in one day. For most people who want to actually climb to the hermitage, the Gaztelugatxe, Bermeo and Gernika day trip is the clearest fit, because its listing says you hike over the bridge and up the steps.
What you are actually visiting
San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is a small rocky islet joined to the Biscay coast by a narrow stone bridge. A stepped path zigzags up to the hermitage on top, 241 steps in all, according to the Biscay provincial council. Many visitors know it as Dragonstone from Game of Thrones, and the listing for the day trip above mentions that filming connection.
Two paths lead down from the road to the bridge. The Urizarreta route is the steeper one; the Ermu route is longer and gentler. Neither avoids the 241 steps at the end. The council states that the visit is not recommended for people with mobility problems, so treat this as a walk, not a viewpoint. Allow roughly two to three hours for the whole visit if you go on your own, which is an estimate rather than an official figure.
The path can be restricted or closed when the sea or weather is rough, mostly in autumn and winter. A tour operator will tell you if that happens; if you drive, check before you set off.
The free ticket, and when it applies
Entry costs nothing, but on controlled-access days you must reserve a free timed ticket online through the Biscay provincial council (bizkaia.eus). On other days you can simply turn up. In recent years the controlled days have covered every day of the summer season plus weekends and bank holidays in spring and early autumn, but the calendar is published each year, so look at the current one rather than trusting a blog post, including this one.
The practical point: if you want to go on a summer day, a free ticket is part of the plan. A day tour from Bilbao deals with that on your behalf, so ask the operator on the booking page how the entry slot is handled.
Going on your own
By car it is roughly 40 to 60 minutes from Bilbao, depending on traffic. The parking at the trailhead is small, which is another reason the ticket slot and your arrival time matter. If you want the freedom to stop in Bermeo or Mundaka afterwards, you can compare rental cars for Bilbao and check the pick-up rules before you book.
Without a car, a Bizkaibus service runs to the trailhead in summer. It is reported to take about an hour and a half from Bilbao, and winter connections are thinner, so look at the current timetable. The alternative is a bus to Bakio and a walk of around four kilometres along the coast.
The day trips compared
| Tour | What the listing says | Duration | From | Rating · reviews |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gaztelugatxe, Bermeo, Mundaka, Gernika and wine tour | Dragonstone, three towns and txakoli at Berroja Winery | 10 hours | €35 | 4.7 · 3,315 |
| Gaztelugatxe, Mundaka and Guernica tour | Guided; admire Dragonstone, visit Mundaka and Guernica | 6 hours | €34.50 | 4.7 · 2,481 |
| Gaztelugatxe, Bermeo and Gernika day trip | Hike over the bridge and up the steps, then Bermeo and Gernika | 9 hours | €70 | 4.8 · 872 |
| Gaztelugatxe with access, Bermeo and Gernika | Free time to climb to the top, a fishing village, the Tree of Gernika | 6 hours | €59.99 | 4.3 · 617 |
| San Juan de Gaztelugatxe and Basque coast walk | A walk along the coast plus Gaztelugatxe | 3.5 hours | €70 | 4.9 · 256 |
| Basque coast and Gaztelugatxe small group tour | Exclusive guided tour for a maximum of four people | 4 hours | €89 | 4.9 · 104 |
How to choose
The two cheapest tours are also the most reviewed, but their listings do not say you climb to the hermitage. The six-hour one says you will “admire” Dragonstone. If reaching the top matters to you, ask the operator before booking, or pick one whose listing states the climb: the nine-hour day trip, or the six-hour “with access” tour.
The six-hour “with access” tour has the lowest rating of the group at 4.3, so it is worth reading the recent reviews before you commit. If you only have half a day and prefer a small group, the four-hour small group tour is the most personal option, at more than twice the price of the cheapest tours.
Whatever you pick, a morning start suits the climb better than a late one, simply because 241 steps in midday heat in summer are tiring. That is common sense rather than an official recommendation.
When to go on your own instead
Go on your own if you have a car, you are happy to book the free ticket yourself, and you want only Gaztelugatxe at your own pace. Book a tour if you want the ticket handled, would rather not drive the coast road, or want Bermeo, Mundaka and Gernika in the same day.
